Fireplaces! Fireplaces! The whole notion conjures up such lovely images: of families cuddled cosily around a roaring fire, toasting crumpets, maybe, or roasting chestnuts; of friends laughing, sharing a glass of wine around glowing embers; of Christmastime and warming up cold fingers and toes after playing in the snow. Romantic? Who me?!

To me, I see the fireplace as a focal point, not just of a living room but of the whole home. It's one of the places that we gather as a family, to play games, to eat, to chat, to just be together and enjoy the primeval draw of the flickering flames.

Not forgetting a gorgeous dark hearth. The combination, to me, is utter perfection, and warms my soul every time. 

Room after room that I'd saved over the years features this same look....and I hadn't even clocked the reason until I put my analytical hat on and thought through what is was precisely that I loved about these gorgeous living rooms.

Big grand affairs, or tiny little beauties. I love them all!
